Scientific Committee of the World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism

Since the creation of the World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism, Peter Keller has prepared, in collaboration with the responsible authorities, the programmes of its successive editions.

Mr. Keller is professor emeritus at the Faculty of Business and Economics of the University of Lausanne, where he has headed the Institute of Tourism for two decades, and is a visiting professor at the Universities of Lugano, St. Gallen and Bergamo. He is president of the International Association of Scientific Experts of Tourism (AIEST) and is an advisor to the World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) and the OECD. He is also a member of the Executive Board of Switzerland’s National Tourism Office "Suisse Tourisme". He chairs the Board of Directors of a sports and holiday resort in the mountains of Valais.

Prof. Keller was also in charge of tourism promotion and policy at the Swiss Federal Government for over three decades until the start of 2008. In this capacity, among other functions, he was a member of the Executive Board of the Federation of Tourism Industries.

During his service in this post, he developed the foundations of federal policy in this area, authoring the report “Conception suisse du tourisme”. He proposed and introduced a new policy for the concession of cableways, and he contributed, among other things, to the reorganization of the Swiss National Tourism Office, the establishment of an innovation and cooperation programme for the Confederation, and the introduction of a reduced VAT rate for accommodation. In 2009, he was recognized for his activities in tourism promotion and policy and was awarded the "Swiss Tourism Prize". He is an honorary member of the hotel and restaurant federation GASTROSUISSE.

At the international level, Prof. Keller has chaired the UNWTO Commission for Europe from 1991 to 2005 and the OECD Committee on Tourism in the 1980s and again from 1999 to 2007. He was a member of the UNWTO Strategic Group. He was also responsible for the programme of the Chamonix-Mont-Blanc Tourism Summits.
