Secretary-General Message

Mr. Taleb Rifai

UNWTO Secretary-General

The World Tourism Organization (UNWTO) has been long addressing the important issue of snow and mountain tourism. Since 1998 we have organized, in partnership with the Government of the Principality of Andorra, the World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism held every two years in this inspiring Pyrenees destination.

Over these last 15 years, we have built important knowledge, created networks and developed new ways to look into the trends and changes shaping “mountain tourism” such as seasonal distribution of tourism activities and the emergence of new products.

Mountains have unique tourism resources which, if used and deployed in a sustainable manner, can attract visitors for ski but also for many other activities which can support and promote the preservation of natural resources and create wealth all year long.

I trust that the 8th Edition of the World Congress on Snow and Mountain Tourism will create a platform among the various stakeholders for dialogue and the debate of new ideas on how to develop a strategic approach to enhance the potential of the mountain destinations, in particular for summer tourism.

Mr. Taleb Rifai
